Pig Flu Symptoms?
It is suggested that areas with the highest volume of aboriginal communities are being targeted the most and indigenous Australians are more likely to require hospitalization when infected.
How do You Catch It?
The reason why H1N1 influenza is so frightening is because it is spread just as easy as the common flu. Individuals who are infected are highly contagious and are able to spread the virus long before they know that they are sick or show any symptoms.
The easiest way to become infected is by breathing in the air droplets that are expelled by someone coughing or sneezing around you. Also, the virus is able to contaminate objects that you may touch. This is especially true if someone sneezes or coughs in their hand and then touches an object before you. The second that you touch that item, you have picked up the virus and then if you touch your mouth, eyes or nose, you become contaminated. It's that easy!
Symptoms
It is quite challenging to determine if you have pig flu symptoms without being tested because they are quite similar to the seasonal flu. However, the fever is often more severe and most individuals see temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius. This high fever is often accompanied with a cough, headache, extreme fatigue, muscle aches and nasal secretions. Some individuals also have vomiting or diarrhea as well..
Quite often, symptoms will go away by themselves with plenty of liquids and rest, just like any other virus. However, if you experience confusion, dizziness, severe vomiting or chest or abdominal pain, you need to seek medical attention.
Treatment
There are medications available in Australia to treat H1N1 influenza. Oseltamivir and zanamivir are both recommended by the DCD to treat and also prevent the virus. These antiviral drugs work by stopping the virus from reproducing once it is inside your body. They are most effective when you start taking them within 48 hour of experiencing your first pig flu symptoms. They will make them much more mild and when started promptly, will keep the virus from progressing into something much more severe like pneumonia that could be deadly.
