Causes And Symptoms Of Streptococcus Infections

Infections caused by the bacteria streptococcus are represented especially by irritation and inflammation of the back throat and tonsils. The symptoms occur sudden and are represented by fever and severe throat pains. Sore throats can be triggered by group C and G streptococci but most commonly the infection is due to the presence of group A beta-hemolytic streptococcus.

The main symptoms of the streptococcus infection causing a sore throat are fever usually more than 38.5, difficulties and pain during swallowing, inflamed lymph nodes and inflamed and irritated tonsils with presence of white or yellow points on their surface. Less common, the streptococcus infections can produce headaches and abdominal pain as well as rare cases of skin rash, vomiting and lack of appetite. Most of the streptococcus conditions are accompanied by a general feeling of illness and discomfort.

The time period between contacting the bacteria and developing the symptoms is usually of 2-5 days and is called incubation period. Patients that have been exposed to streptococcus are considered contagious and can spread the infection to others if they show specific symptoms or have not started an antibiotic therapy yet. Also some of the persons without clinical manifestations can spread the bacteria. In 24 to 48 hours after you have started the medication with antibiotics, you are no longer considered contagious; contacts that do not seek medical help remain contagious for about 2-3 weeks even if the symptoms disappear.

In spite of the cases when the rapid streptococcus test is positive, the most common cause of sore throats is viral infections especially with Influenza. Strep infections do not trigger symptoms like coughs, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, signs usually connected to different types of colds. If the mentioned symptoms are present, it is more likely for you to suffer from an Influenza infection than from a streptococcus triggered sore throat.

There are several practical methods to detect streptococcus and be able to prescribe the appropriate antibiotic therapy. Most useful identification methods are the rapid test, the physical examination and the medical history of the patient. The presence of streptococcus detected through the rapid test can be confirmed by the most accurate but longer lasting bacterial culture.

Sore throats caused by streptococcus usually go away in 3-7 days with or without medical care and ant biotherapy. Antibiotics do not influence the curing period very much but are administered to kill the bacteria and prevent contagiousness and further complications. For benefic effects, antibiotics must be administered within the first 2-3 days after the symptoms have occurred.

Symptomatic treatments for fever, pains and discomfort, are also non-pharmaceutical products, especially homeopathic ones.

Upper Abdominal Bloating Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Considered to be the most common symptom in Irritable Bowel Syndrome, upper abdominal bloating can be quite painful and could be very uncomfortable. It is a health condition wherein the person feels tight and full in the stomach area. The bloating can be attributed to excess intestinal gas. If you're experiencing this frequently, it would be wise to see a physician.

Possible Causes

There are a lot of causes, the most common is the accumulation of intestinal gas and liquids.

Other causes include:

Food Allergy
Overeating
Aerophagia or Air Swallowing
Lactose Intolerance
Partial Bowel Obstruction
Constipation
Menstruation Visceral Fat
Gastric Dumping Syndrome
Irritable Bowel Syndrome

If you think that your condition is associated with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, it is important that your doctor diagnose it correctly and eliminate the other causes in order to provide effective treatment.

Common Symptoms

Some of the most common signs are:

Excessive Belching
Flatulence
Abdominal Pain Especially After Eating

Treatment

If it is associated with IBS, your doctor will usually recommend the following treatment:

Fiber Supplements - such as psyllium and flax seed
Antacids - to minimize gas build up due to acid
Diet Modification - avoid fatty foods and foods that produces gas
IBS Medication

It is also recommended that you:

Eat slowly
Walk after each meal
Engage in regular physical activity
Remove stress by relaxation techniques

With proper diagnosis, treatment and management, bloating can be minimized if not avoided. The important thing is to have your doctor perform a complete physical exam, medical family history and medical testing in order to confirm the cause of this condition.

Why Does My Dog Have Diarrhea? Dog Diarrhea Causes and Treatment

Diarrhea is an extremely common condition which affects dogs of all ages. If your dog has soft bowel motions, it indicates something is not quite right in his intestines. It also means you may have extra cleaning up to do!

Loose stools have many causes, some more serious than others. Here are the most common reasons your dog may develop diarrhea.

1. Dogs aren't always sensible about what they eat, and don't snacking on any spoiled food or even dead birds they come across during the day. As you can imagine, this upsets their gastrointestinal system, and will cause diarrhea, often accompanied by vomiting.

2. Still on the subject of diet, even a change in the brand of kibble you feed your dog may result in loose stools for a few days as his intestines adapt to the new food. You can avoid this by gradually changing his food over the course of a few days. Increase the amount of new food and decrease the amount of old food in his dinner bowl at each meal, and he shouldn't have any problems at all.

3. Worms often cause diarrhea, particularly in young pups. This too is preventable by using an effective wormer on a regular basis. Ask your veterinarian for advice about a suitable worming product and treatment schedule for your dog.

4. Loose stools can be associated with stress and anxiety in dogs. Has your dog had a recent change in his life? Perhaps you've moved house, or your dog is spending more time alone than he used to.

5. Dogs, like people, can have food allergies, and diarrhea is one possible symptom of such an allergy. These dogs often also have itchy skin and ears. Food allergies are often tricky to diagnose, and take a lot of discipline on their owner's part to manage.

6. Infection. Most dog owners will have heard of the dreaded parvovirus. This causes severe and bloody diarrhea in dogs, accompanied by vomiting and depression. Parvovirus can kill a dog. There are other viruses which aren't as severe as parvovirus but can still make your dog quite sick.

What do you do if your dog has diarrhea?

If he is obviously sick, depressed and not interested in what's going on around him, you need to take him to your vet. If he does have a serious condition such as parvovirus, he'll respond better to treatment if it is started early. Similarly, if there is blood in the diarrhea, he needs veterinary attention sooner rather than later.

Many dogs develop diarrhea and are otherwise bright and alert, and still have a wag in their tail. If that's the case with your dog, you can watch him for 24 hours and see if his stools start to firm up.

It's a good idea to skip his next meal to give his intestines time to settle down, and then re-introduce food by giving him 3 or 4 small bland meals over the course of the day. Lean chicken and boiled white rice is ideal. Make sure you treat him for worms, and if the diarrhea persists for more than a day, or if he becomes unwell, it's time to call your vet.

Our dogs are like family to us and so naturally it's very upsetting when they become sick. Wouldn't it be wonderful if you knew how to give your dog a check-up, so you could spot a problem early? Before it became truly serious or even life threatening?

Well, now you can!

Causes of High White Blood Cell Count

There are several possible causes for a high white blood cell count. This count is high when there are more disease-fighting cells in your body. The technical term for this condition is leukocytosis.

Different medical practices may have different limits by which they define high white blood cell count. A count of 10,500 leukocytes in one microliter of blood is widely accepted as a high count. The threshold may vary between sex and age.

White blood cells are categorized by five subtypes, and each type has a different activity in fighting disease. When you get the results of your white blood cell count, they will usually specify what the levels are of all the different types. Usually, a high count is only caused by an increase in one type of white blood cells.

A high white blood cell count is indicative of an immune system problem that increases their production; a disease in your bone marrow that causes high blood cell production; a reaction to some drug that is used to enhance cell production; or the increase expected when your body is fighting off an infection.

There are some more specific reasons why your white blood cell count may be high:

Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a cancer that lives in the bone marrow and blood. This disease is a rapidly progressive one. Children are more affected by this than any other type of cancer, although adults can develop the disease as well.

Drugs like epinephrine and corticosteroids can affect your white cell count.

Measles is an infection that affects mainly the respiratory tract. It is very contagious. The signs include skin rash, fever, sore throat, inflamed eyes, runny nose and cough. The measles vaccine is an excellent way to protect children against this disease, but outside of the civilized countries, many children are not vaccinated. This disease will spread rapidly among people who have not had the vaccination.

Rheumatoid arthritis is a serious type of arthritis from which you will experience joint damage and pain. It attacks your joints' lining and this causes swelling. In turn, that leads to throbbing, aching pain and possibly eventual deformity. Rheumatoid arthritis, also called RA, can make even the easiest of normal activities hard to accomplish.

Some of the other causes of high white blood cell count include:

Stress, be it emotional or physical
Smoking
Tuberculosis
Tissue damage, like one receives with burns
Acute or chronic myelogenous leukemia
Chronic or acute lymphocytic leukemia
Whooping cough
Severe allergic reactions
Myelofibrosis
Polycythemia vera
Other viral infections
Other bacterial infections

Hand Tremor - Causes and Symptoms of Hand Tremor

A tremor is an involuntary movement or shaking of any body part (even your head or voice may be involved). It is often most noticeable in your hands. Essential tremor is common in older people. Essential tremor is rarely present when the hands are not being used. It becomes most apparent when the affected person is trying to do something, like reaching for an object or writing. It is not caused by an underlying disease.

Tremors can happen at any age but tend to be more common in older people. You can develop a tremor from fatigue, stress, anxiety, or even rage. However, an ongoing tremor that is not associated with a change in your emotional state may be a sign of an underlying medical condition and should be evaluated. You may learn, as many do, that your tremors are perfectly normal, but eliminating medical reasons for the shaking is important.

Difficulty in making precise finger movements will necessitate enlarged keypads with rests, key-guards or delayed activation. Selection of key operating pressure may be critical to the avoidance of muscular spasm. Both audible and displayed key feedback will be necessary to confirm correct actuation and avoidance of unwanted repeats. Speech-input keying may be desirable, but some conditions giving rise to hand tremor also cause hesitancy in speech.

Causes of Hand tremor

Environmental factors: People with unusual exposure to herbicides and pesticides are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than are people who don't have this exposure. Researchers haven't yet been able to connect a specific herbicide or pesticide to the disease.

Hyperthyroidism or thyrotoxicosis occurs when the thyroid releases too many of its hormones over a short (acute) or long (chronic) period of time.

Tremors caused by stress, try relaxation techniques like meditation, deep relaxation, or breathing exercises. For tremors of any cause, avoid caffeine and get enough sleep.

Half of the cases are due to gene mutation and transmitted dominantly. There are two main loci: ETM1 and ETM2. The rest are idiopathic. No identifiable and consistent structural abnormality has yet been demonstrated to exist in the nervous system of every person with ET.

Essential tremor is the most common form of abnormal tremor. Although the cause is unknown, new research shows that the part of the brain called the cerebellum does not appear to work correctly in patients with essential tremor. The cerebellum is the part of the brain that coordinates muscle movements.

Symptoms of Hand tremor

Rigid muscles: Muscle stiffness (rigidity) often occurs in your limbs and neck. Sometimes the stiffness can be so severe that it limits the size of your movements and causes pain.

The signs and symptoms of withdrawal appear between six to 48 hours after the patient "stops" drinking alcohol. Some of the most common symptoms include tremors, mild headaches, cold sweat, vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, restlessness, rapid pulse, anxiety and auditory hallucinations.

However, some testing may be done to rule out other causes of tremors, such as excessive caffeine or tobacco use, alcohol withdrawal, use of certain medications (for example, asthma drugs, lithium, certain antidepressants and anti-seizure drugs)

Physiological Tremor: This is a very-low-amplitude fine tremor (between 6 Hz and 12 Hz) that is barely visible to the naked eye. It is present in every normal individual during maintaining a posture or movement. Neurologic examination results of patients with physiologic tremor are usually normal.

Angelman Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms And Treatment

Angelman Syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by a fault in chromosome 15. There are many ways to treat the disorder but unfortunately, there are no proven methods to cure it. However, researchers are continuing to search for ways to permanently cure the disease. Angelman Syndrome, sometimes called AS for short was once known as 'happy puppet' because of the patient's sunny outlook and jerky movements. It was later renamed after Harry Angelman, the physician who pioneered investigation into symptoms of the disease in 1965. AS causes developmental delay and neurological problems, and can affect any person regardless of their race, gender, or age.

Angelman Syndrome is usually not recognized at birth or in infancy since the developmental problems are nonspecific during this time. Parents may begin to suspect the diagnosis after reading about AS or meeting a child with the condition. The most common age of diagnosis is between three and seven years of age, when the characteristic behaviors and features become most evident. A child who has Angelman Syndrome will show many symptoms, some which are omnipresent and others which can remain dormant for long periods of time.

Some symptoms that are always present include severe speech impairment, hyperactive behavior, movement or balance disorders, and developmental delay in sitting, crawling, walking, or mental retardation. Jerky marionette-type movements, stiff-legged walking, hand flapping, and unique behavior with an inappropriate happy demeanor that includes frequent laughing, smiling, and excitability are also some of the usual symptoms in a diagnosed child. Symptoms that are not always evident include having a small head, characteristic EEG abnormalities, tremulousness of the limbs, and seizures onset before three years of age. Many children with this disease will also have a protruding tongue, disturbed sleep, frequent drooling, and feeding difficulty during infancy. Microcephaly and Epilepsy are both common in children with this irreversible disorder.

There is no standard course of treatment for Angelman Syndrome because there is no known way to prevent or cure it. Treatment is mainly focused on providing physical therapy and adaptive devices to assist with gait and balance problems. Early language evaluation and intervention is also recommended. Patients with epilepsy are often prescribed anticonvulsant medications. Parents of children with AS usually find strength, valuable information, and comfort from support groups.

Occupational therapies, communication therapy, and behavioral therapies are important in allowing individuals with Angelman syndrome to reach their maximum developmental potential. Most individuals with AS will have severe developmental delays, speech limitations, and motor difficulties. However, people with this irrevokable disease can have normal life spans and generally do not show developmental regression as they age. Early diagnosis and the tailored interventions and therapies listed above can help improve the quality of life for those who were unfortunately diagnosed with this dire genetic disorder.

Angelman Syndrome is caused by an abnormal expression of a group of genes on chromosome 15. Researchers have found a very small deleted area in this chromosome in patients with AS. This deleted area contains genes that can be either activated or inactivated, depending on which parent the chromosome was inherited from. The gene for this disease is called UBE3A. When this gene is turned on, Angelman Syndrome does not occur. However when it is turned off or missing, Angelman Syndrome occurs. In patients with Angelman Syndrome, a missing UBE3A gene only occurs in the chromosome given by the mother.

For this reason, it seems that the UBE3A gene is turned on only on the chromosome inherited from mother. Researchers have also found that Angelman Syndrome is caused when a child inherits both chromosomes 15 from the father. This condition is called paternal uniparental disomy (UPD). In this case, both chromosomes have their UBE3A genes turned off. There is a control region, called the Imprinting Center (IC), which can control or turn on or off the action of the UBE3A gene. Mutations in the area of the Imprinting Center can also cause Angelman Syndrome, as well as many other genetic disorders.

Some disorders have similar or even the same symptoms as Angelman Syndrome. Therefore, when a doctor is diagnosing a patient, he/she must somehow rule out the other disorders to ensure that they will come up with a precise diagnosis. Some of the other disorders include Prader-Willi Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Rett Syndrome, Idiopathic Epilepsy, and Static Encephalopathy. AS is a fairly rare disorder. While an exact count of cases in the United States is not available, the Angelman Syndrome Foundation (ASF) has found around 1000 cases in the U.S. and Canada. However, the most important aspect of this disease has yet to be recognized: a cure.

In the recent years, there has been some beneficial research into the location and identification of the genes causing Angelman Syndrome. Now efforts are being directed towards examination of the precise functions of these genes. There is still much progress to be made in understanding the symptoms of this condition, particularly the communication problems and the seizure disorder. Therefore, the research is divided into two categories. One is Scientific research, which involves using laboratory techniques to find out about the basic chemical, physiological and anatomical abnormalities in the condition and aids diagnosis.

The other is Clinical research, which involves the observation and study of patients themselves. Both types of research will be vital in the quest to cure AS. It is thought to be unlikely that gene therapy will ever be able to cure Angelman Syndrome, due to the fact that some of the effects on early brain development are irreversible. Understanding of the genes involved, however, could be a valuable guide as to which drugs might be used to treat the condition. Quality clinical research can help to teach more about which therapies are particularly useful in the management of AS. There are now many centers all over the world which are involved in researching a cure. With all these ideas from major centers, as well as help from Angelman Syndrome families, researchers should be able to understand more about how the genes on chromosome 15 cause the symptoms of Angelman Syndrome.

Histrionic Personality Disorder - Causes, Symptoms, Information With Treatment

Many mental health professionals believe that both learned and inherited factors play a role in its development. It seems likely that Histrionic Personality Disorder may be over-diagnosed in women and under-diagnosed in men. Most people are more attuned, for example, to the histrionic flamboyance of Blanche DuBois than to the equally over-the-top macho style of Stanley Kowalski, who shows strong histrionic elements as well. Psychoanalytic theories incriminate seductive and authoritarian attitudes by fathers of these patients.

Other character traits due to a combination of genetics and environment including adverse childhood experiences. Other environmental factors that might be involved include a lack of criticism or punishment as a child, positive reinforcement that is given only when a child completes certain approved behaviors, and unpredictable attention given to a child by his or her parent(s), all leading to confusion about what types of behavior earn parental approval. A pervasive pattern of excessive emotionality and attention seeking, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts. In many cases, people with histrionic personality disorder have good social skills; however, they tend to use these skills to manipulate others so that they can be the center of attention.

Treatment of Histrionic Personality Disorder

Common Treatment of Histrionic Personality Disorder

Treatment is often prompted by depression associated with failed romantic relationships. Group therapy is not recommended for those with HPD.

Psychotherapy (a type of counseling) is generally the treatment of choice for histrionic personality disorder. The goal of treatment is to help the individual uncover the motivations and fears associated with his or her thoughts and behavior, and to help the person learn to relate to others in a more positive way.

Medication might be used to treat the distressing symptoms, such as depression and anxiety that might co-occur with this disorder.

Dialectical behavior therapy. This type of cognitive behavior therapy focuses on coping skills - learning how to take better control of behaviors and emotions with techniques such as mindfulness, which helps you observe your feelings without reacting. It is most often used to treat borderline personality disorder. Doctors are studying the effectiveness of this type of therapy with all types of personality disorders.

Retts Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms, Information with Treatment

Rett syndrome is not a degenerative disorder, but rather is a neurodevelopmental disorder. Rett syndrome affects one in every 10,000 to 15,000 live female births. It occurs in all racial and ethnic groups worldwide. Parents later reflected on how it was nearly impossible to comfort them during their episodes. As many as 75% of all girls with RS had been previously diagnosed with the Autism Spectrum Disorder. Adult women with Rett syndrome show many individual differences in the severity of their disability. All women with Rett syndrome are incapable of living independently and require constant care throughout their lives.

Innovative and flexible living arrangements such as group homes are becoming the norm in many cases. There are several treatments options available treat for rett-sydrome. Occupational therapy , physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy may prolong mobility. Medication may be needed for breathing irregularities and motor difficulties, and antiepileptic drugs may be used to control seizures. Some children may require special equipment and aids such as braces to arrest scoliosis, splints to modify hand movements, and nutritional programs to help them maintain adequate weight. Special academic, social, vocational, and support services may also be required in some cases.

Lynch Syndrome - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment Methods

Lynch syndrome is a rare disorder. The condition is named after Henry Lynch, a doctor and authority on inherited cancers. The estimated proportion of all CRCs that are caused by Lynch syndrome depends on how this syndrome is defined, with traditional definitions being based on family history and age of onset. It is also known as hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer syndrome(HNPCC). It is caused by mutations or alterations of particular genes. Lynch syndrome strongly predisposes people who have this inherited defect to develop colorectal cancer as well as several other types of cancer. The genes associated with HNPCC can sometimes cause other cancers, such as stomach, ovary, endometrium (the lining of the womb) and kidney. HNPCC is an inherited cause of cancer of the bowel. The HNPCC syndrome is due to mutation in a gene in the DNA mismatch repair system, usually the MLH1 or MSH2 gene or less often the MSH6 or PMS2 genes. The syndrome is classified as Type I in the absence of extracolonic cancers and Type II if these are present. However, sarcomas have rarely been described in these families. The cancers of the colorectal area associated with the Lynch Syndromes usually develop at a younger age than is normally found in other persons with colorectal cancer.

The syndrome is neither common nor rare, occurring in one or two of every 1,000 people. Women with HNPCC have a 20-60% lifetime risk of endometrial cancer. In HNPCC, the gastric cancer is usually intestinal-type adenocarcinoma. Other HNPCC-related cancers have characteristic features: the urinary tract cancers are transitional carcinoma of the ureter and renal pelvis; the small bowel cancer is most common in the duodenum and jejunum; and the most common type of brain tumor is glioblastoma. When colorectal cancer is associated with Lynch syndrome, it tends to occur at a younger age than in most other colorectal cancer cases. Colorectal cancer associated with Lynch syndrome tends to occur in people at a younger age than for people with the more common nonhereditary forms of colorectal cancer. Family history can provide important clues to the presence of the Lynch syndrome. Different segments of the DNA strands contain genes responsible for different structures and functions in the body. For example, certain segments of DNA carry genes that determine one's eye color, hair color, height, and other physical characteristics. Other DNA segments of DNA carry genes that regulate the duplication and the rate of growth of cells.

Causes of Lynch syndrome

The common causes and risk factor's of Lynch syndrome include the following:

Lynch syndrome is caused by mutations or alterations of particular genes.

Age is the primary risk factor.

If you have a family history of Lynch syndrome, you're at much greater risk of inheriting this condition yourself.

Daily alcohol use (may double the risk).

Eating a high-fat, low-fiber diet.

Genetic disorders such as familial polyposis syndromes and hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer syndrome (HNPCC).

Not having periods, or not having them often.

Smoking is also a risk factor for Lynch syndrome.

Symptoms of Lynch syndrome

Some sign and symptoms related to Lynch syndrome are as follows:

Changes in bowel habits- for example, constipation or diarrhea that persists for longer than several days.

Change in appetite.

Abdominal pain and even an abdominal mass.

Feelings of fatigue or weakness.

Black, tarry stool, which may represent bleeding above the rectum.

Iron deficiency without another identifiable cause.

Rectal bleeding.

Fatigue associated with anemia.

Treatment of Lynch syndrome

Here is list of the methods for treating Lynch Syndrome:

When polyps associated with Lynch syndrome are present, doctors remove them during a colonoscopy.

Chemotherapy, which uses drugs to destroy cancer cells. This approach often follows surgery.

Surgery may also be an option in people who carry the genetic mutation of Lynch syndrome, even if they don't yet have colorectal cancer.

The standard treatment is to give radiotherapy after surgery to women in certain circumstances.

Most people with Lynch syndrome choose frequent colonoscopies over prophylactic surgery.

Cellulitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment for Cellulitis

Cellulitis is a common inflammation of the connective tissue underlying the skin. It appears when bacteria occupy broken or normal skin, cuts, burns, insect bites, surgical wounds, or sites of endovenous catheter insertion and start to spread just beneath the skin or in the skin itself. This leads to an infection and inflammation of the cells, erythema, edema, and warmth.

Cellulitis can occur on any part of your body but lower legs or skin on the face are most commonly affected by this infection .Staphylococcus ("staph") is the main bacteria which causes cellulitis. Occasionally, some other bacteria may cause cellulitis as well.

As a spreading infection cellulitis generally
starts as a small region of tenderness, swelling, and skin redness . As this red region starts to increase, the person may result a fever, sometimes with chills and sweats, and swollen glands near the area of infected skin.

Causes

Cellulitis may be caused by many different bacteria but streptococcus and staphylococcus are the most common originator of these bacteria, which are normally exist on the skin but cause no actual infection until the skin is broken. So cellulitis is started by entering by way of a break in the skin. This break can't be visible by naked eye. Predisposing conditions for cellulitis include insect bite, animal bite, pruritic skin rash, recent surgery , athlete's foot , dry skin , eczema , burns & boils , though there is debate as to whether minor foot lesions contribute .Streptococci spread instantly in the skin because they produce enzymes that impede the ability of the tissue to confine the infection.

Pneumococcus may result a specifically malignant form of cellulitis, usually in an immunocompromised host, and frequently is combined with tissue necrosis, suppuration, and blood stream invasion.

There are some reported cases of cellulitis where it appears on areas of trauma, the broken skin, such as the skin near ulcers or surgical wounds. Also some wounds appearing after exposure to fresh water may be lead to Aeromonas hydrophila, a gram-negative rod.

Symptoms

Cellulitis can be occurred anywhere in the body but it most commonly develops on the legs. The main symptoms are skin redness or inflammation that spreads in size as the infection spreads , tight, glossy, stretched occurrence of the skin , tenderness of the area , skin injury or rash, sudden onset ,warmth over the redskin, fever .there are some other signs of infection includes chills, shaking, fatigue, warm skin, sweating, muscle aches, myalgias. Some of the additional symptoms that may be related with this disease are nausea, vomiting & hair loss at the site of infection

In some advanced cases of cellulitis, red streaks may be seen moving up the affected area. The swelling can spread frequently. The infected skin gets hot and slightly swollen and may look slightly pockmarked, like an orange peel. The swelling appears due to the infection blocks the lymphatic vessels in the skin.

Treatments

Antibiotics are used to control infection, and analgesics may be needed to ebb pain. Commonly used oral antibiotics are penicillin, flucloxacillin, cefuroxime or erythromycin. Antibiotics taken are penicillin-based antibiotics (e.g. penicillin G or flucloxacillin) or cephalosporins (e.g. cefotaxime or cefazolin).

Clindamycin and vancomycin are efficacious antibiotics in patients with serious penicillin or cephalosporin allergy.

Amoxicillin and clavulanic acid may be used in the situations where a broader antibiotic cover is required, for example a diabetic patient with a foot ulcer.

It is recommend that person should wear long sleeves and pants in high risk areas e.g. gardening. Maintained proper hygiene& keep skin clean and well moisturized, with nails well tended, avoid having blood tests using from the affected limb , cure fungal infections of hands and feet early, keep swollen limbs elevated during rest periods to cure lymphatic circulation.

Thrush An Embarrassing Ailment - The Causes And Treatment

What Causes It ?

Most people carry candida in their bodies, but normally it is kept at low levels by the body's own immune system. It can live in the intestines, mouth, skin, and vagina where" friendly" bacteria help keep yeast levels low. An increase of oestrogen caused by pregnancy and the contraceptive pill can encourage candida growth. Antibiotics, which can destroy good bacteria can be another cause

Some women experience symptoms similar to thrush but actually have an allergy to latex condoms, spermicides and the rubber in cervical caps.Thrush can also be passed on to men. Over the counter remedies usually settle the attack in 48 hours, but if does not respond to treatment after two weeks, they should consult their doctor for a swab test to rule out other infections and show which type of candida is causing the infection. The doctor may also want to test for diabetes and dermatitis. In rare cases the tests could indicate cancer of the vulva.

Treatment

Over the counter remedies are anti fungal drugs in the form of vaginal pessaries or creams, these are usually helpful. Foods such as sugar and dairy products, coffee, tea and wine are thought to contribute to the problem by increasing uriny sugar, an environment which candida thrives. Anything that changes the body's natural acidity, such as perfumed soaps, douches and bubble baths can also irritate. Avoid tight trousers, leggings, and synthetic underwear such as tights, as these prevent air circulating and can create the perfect environment for thrush.

Whats New?

Sadly little has developed for thrush in terms of research. One of the newest alternative treatments is Dida, a natural herbal supplement which may help matain a healthy candida balance in the body.

What Really Causes Autism?

Autism is a disorder that generally is noticed in children around the age of three. For some unknown reason, autism is four times more frequent in boys than in girls. The disorder manifests itself in varying degrees in each child, but generally, the child has few interactive skills with other children, doesn't talk, doesn't make eye contact, may throw tantrums, and may act deaf when he or she has normal hearing. These are just a few of the symptoms.

It is generally accepted that autism is brought about by abnormalities in the structure of the brain or some kind of malfunctioning of the brain. It is considered a neurological disorder. As of yet, we do not know what causes this malfunctioning. There are several theories. One is environmental factors such as toxins in the air, viruses or exposure to chemicals such as mercury. Another is that autism is hereditary, as it does seem to run in families. However; they have not been able to isolate a gene that causes it. In addition, there is evidence that the potential to develop autism also runs in families.

A less popular theory is that the mother may have had problems during pregnancy or delivery, which included digesting a harmful substance. Other theories have included mothers having babies later on in life; having premature babies, and having babies born in the breech position. Studies on these factors have not come up with anything decisive and have left the medical disciplines unconvinced. There have even been theories that the measles vaccination may have caused some children to have autism. More research would have to be done for this to be conclusive.

One thing is agreed on in the medical fields surrounding autism; it is not a mental disorder. It is not caused by psychological problems of the parents or the child. Children are born with the disorder, or they are born with the potential to have it. Early diagnosis can help tremendously. Corrective behavior can be learned and a certain amount of independence can be established if the problem is caught early. Living with an autistic child is certainly not an easy task, but it can be easier, armed with knowledge of the disorder and taking advantage of the professional services available. There are many support groups as well. It is thought that 1.5 million people in the U.S. may have some form of autism.

Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Guillain-Barré Syndrome called is acute inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy and Landry's ascending paralysis. It is a an inflammatory disorder of the peripheral nerves and autoimmune disorder. Its frequency is about 1 to 2 cases in every 100,000 people per year in the United States. Men and women, but it occurs most often in young and the elderly.Guillain-Barre syndrome may be an autoimmune disorder in which the body produces antibodies that damage the myelin sheath that surrounds peripheral nerves. The myelin sheath is a fatty substance that surrounds axons. It increases the speed at which signals travel along the nerves. The disorder is characterised by progressive symmetrical paralysis and loss of reflexes, usually beginning in the legs. Perhaps 50% of cases occur shortly after a microbial (viral or bacterial) infection such as a sore throat or diarrhea. An autoimmune mechanism, in which the patient's defense system of antibodies and white blood cells are triggered into damaging the nerve covering or insulation, leading to weakness and abnormal sensation.

GBS commences with progressive muscular weakness of extremities that may lead to paralysis. It spreads rapidly, ascending to involve the cranial nerves. Guillain-Barre syndrome may occur in association with viral infections like glandular fever, AIDS, and herpes simplex or after infections with bacteria. Most people with Guillain-Barre syndrome experience their most significant weakness within three weeks after symptoms begin. The symptoms are not always the same in every person, but typically reflexes will be lost and the paralysis or loss of feeling will occur on both sides of the body rather than just one side or the other. About one quarter of the time, the paralysis continues up the chest and freezes the breathing muscles, leaving the patient dependent on a ventilator. If the swallowing muscles are also affected, a feeding tube may be needed. In some cases, signs and symptoms may progress very rapidly with complete paralysis of legs, arms and breathing muscles over the course of a few hours.

Symptoms of this phase, causing only mild difficulty in walking, requiring crutches or a walking stick. Supportive care with monitoring of all vital functions is the cornerstone of successful management in the acute patient. Plasmapheresis. This treatment -- also known as plasma exchange -- is a type of "blood cleansing" in which damaging antibodies are removed from your blood. Plasmapheresis consists of removing the liquid portion of your blood (plasma) and separating it from the actual blood cells. Additional treatments are directed at prevention of complications such as choking during feeding (through positioning or use of a nasogastric feeding tube), blood clots (through mobilising the patient and sometimes the use of drugs to thin the blood ), intermittent bladder catheterization, and effective treatment of pain. Intravenous immunoglobulin. Immunoglobulin contains healthy antibodies from blood donors. High doses of immunoglobulin can block the damaging antibodies that may contribute to Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Treatment for Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) Tips

1. Plasmapheresis and high-dose immunoglobulin therapy are used.

2. Supportive care with monitoring of all vital functions is the cornerstone of successful management in the acute patient.

3. Immunoglobulin contains healthy antibodies from blood donors.

4. Intravenous immune globulin (IVIg) is equally effective in reducing the severity and duration of the symptoms.

5. Use of steroid hormones has also been tried as a way to reduce the severity of Guillain-Barre.

Cardiac Arrhythmias - Definition, Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Cardiac arrhythmia is a group of conditions in which the electrical activity of the heart is irregular or is faster or slower than normal. Cardiac arrhythmias comprise any abnormality or pertubation in the normal activation sequence of the myocardium. Arrhythmias stem from several causes. The heart's natural timekeeper--a small mass of special cells called the sinus node--can malfunction and develop an abnormal electrical impulse rate. CPR can prolong the survival of the brain in the lack of a normal pulse, but defibrillation is the intervention which is most likely to restore a more healthy heart rhythm. A slow rhythm, known as bradycardia (less than 60 beats/min), is usually not life threatening, but may cause symptoms. When it causes symptoms implantation of a permanent pacemaker may be needed. Either dysrhythmia requires medical attention to evaluate the risks associated with the arrhythmia. The signs and symptoms of cardiac arrhythmias can range from completely asymptomatic to loss of consciousness or sudden cardiac death.

Complaints such as lightheadedness, dizziness, quivering, shortness of breath, chest discomfort, heart fluttering or pounding, and forceful or painful extra beats are commonly reported with a variety of arrhythmias. Beats are generated by electrical impulses in the atria (top chambers of the heart) and are then conducted to the ventricles, where they produce the powerful muscle contraction that pumps blood. People may have allergies or idiosyncratic reactions to many other foods and beverages that cause transitory arrhythmias. Long-term nicotine exposure and any cocaine exposure can cause much more serious arrhythmias. Oxidative stress is a common feature of ischemic-reperfusion injuries, which occur when the heart is temporarily deprived of oxygenated blood (a state known as ischemia), followed by the reintroduction of oxygenated blood (reperfusion). The development of arrhythmias include congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease, high blood pressure (hypertension).

Advances in medicine and technology have created new treatment options for cardiac arrhythmia (commonly known as heart rhythm disturbances). Cardioversion is the application of electrical current across the chest wall to the heart and it is used for treatment of supraventricular or pulsed ventricular tachycardia. Defibrillation differs in that it is used for ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia, and more electricity is delivered with defibrillation than with cardioversion. Arrhythmias may involve medications (anti-arrhythmic therapy), catheter ablations, and implantation of pacemakers or implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICD). Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) or CRT-D (CRT with defibrillator therapy) is an innovative therapeutic option for patients with refractory HF. Defibrillation differs in that it is used for ventricular fibrillation and more electricity is delivered with defibrillation than with cardioversion. Antiarrhythmic medications help to change the electrical signals within the heart to suppress or prevent the arrhythmia.

Treatment for Cardiac Arrhythmias Tips

1. Using a small, battery-powered generator to deliver timed, electrical impulses to the heart muscle through tiny wire leads.

2. The treatment for some patients is a technique called cardiac ablation.

3. Magnetic Guidance in the Heart While transcatheter ablation is very effective, it can be difficult.

4. Stereotaxis Niobe Magnetic Navigation System uses two superconductive magnets, a magnetic-tipped guide wire and advanced computer imaging techniques.

5. Atrial fibrillation can also be treated through a procedure, e.g. pulmonary vein isolation.

6. Fibrillation differs in that it is used for ventricular fibrillation and pulseless ventricular tachycardia.

Meningitis Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

This article explains a few things about meningitis, and if you're interested, then this is worth reading, because you can never tell what you don't know.

Meningitis is a rare disease, our brains have what is called a blood brain barrier that protects are brain for contamination by the blood. However, some infections can trick the barrier, which then decreases its ability to work properly.

Meningitis can be caused from a direct spread of a severe infection such as an ear infection or sinus infection. In some cases, meningitis is noted after head trauma or an injury to the head or brain. There are several causes of meningitis. These include Bacterial infection,

Viral infection, Fungal infection, A reaction to medications, A reaction to medical treatments, Lupus, Some forms of cancer, A trauma to the head or back. Anyone can catch meningitis. This is especially true if your immune system is weak.

Meningitis often begins like the flu does. The major meningitis symptoms include a severe headache that will not go away, stiffness in the neck, stiffness in the upper back, pain in one or both eyes, or an aversion to light, nausea, or the feeling of an upset stomach, vomiting, achy body, fever, sleepy feeling, or the feeling that you just cannot wake up completely, confusion, or a feeling of just not being with it.

Viral meningitis is the most common form. Usually viruses that enter your body through your mouth before going to your brain and multiplying cause it. You can find these viruses in the mucus, saliva and feces. Other viruses that may cause meningitis include: Chickenpox , Flu, Mumps, HIV ,Genital herpes.

Bacterial meningitis is caused from different types of bacteria and viral meningitis can be from a complication of chickenpox. Today, most children are now vaccinated against
chickenpox therefore this can rule out this type of meningitis in most cases.

If your meningitis facts are out-of-date, how will that affect your actions and decisions? Make certain you don't let important meningitis information slip by you.

Bacterial meningitis must be treated quickly. Severe bacterial meningitis will require intravenous antibiotics. Antibiotics cannot be used to treat viral meningitis because they do not kill viruses. The best prevention against meningitis is to, of course, be vaccinated if at all possible.

Treatment for Meningitis Tips

1. Acute bacterial meningitis requires prompt treatment with intravenous antibiotics to ensure recovery and reduce the risk of complications.

2. Pneumovax (also known as Prevenar) against Streptococcus pneumoniae is recommended for all people 65 years of age or older.

3. Drugs such as dexamethasone are sometimes given to reduce inflammation or to reduce the chance, or spread, of septicemia.

4. Antifungals to combat the infection are usually administered, as well as fluids and
medicine to control pain and fever.

Those who only know one or two facts about meningitis can be confused by misleading information. The best way to help those who are misled is to gently correct them with the truths you're learning here. All information about Meningitis on this article is for educational purposes only. For specific medical advice, diagnoses, and treatment, consult your doctor.

The symptoms of asthma

• Cough is the most common symptom of asthma. Cough associated with asthma generally deteriorated in the night and early morning, so sleeping difficult.

• Rapid breathing is a common asthmaSymptom. If respiratory distress, you can try to breathe faster to try to get air in and out of the lungs.

• peak flow numbers can be in the caution or danger zone

• neck area, moving between or under the ribs inward with breathing.

• Walking causes shortness of breath.

Hepatitis - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Definition

Hepatitis known as an inflammation of the liver , is a gastroenterological disease. Hepatitis is generally categorized as a viral or non-viral hepatitis. Viral hepatitis can be considered "rapid" a position that comes on frequently with severe symptoms and for a short time or "chronic" a position that comes on slowly, may or may not have symptoms for a long time.

Lot of sickness and conditions that can lead to inflammation of the liver, for example, drugs, alcohol , chemicals, and autoimmune diseases ,which are categorize as a non viral cause & some viruses that cause inflame the liver, for example, the virus of mononucleosis and the cytomegalovirus can be categorize as a viral .However,Most viruses don't impact on liver .But when doctors speak of viral hepatitis, they generally are referring to hepatitis caused by some specific viruses that primarily attack the liver .There are number of viruses that causes hepatitis. They have been called types A, B, C, D, E, F & G. All of these viruses can result an acute disease with appearance number of weeks including yellowing of the skin and eyes called as jaundice, dark urine, high fatigue, nausea, vomiting & abdominal pain. It can take various months to a year to experience fit again. The most common hepatitis viruses are types A, B, and C

Causes

Hepatitis is most generally caused by one of three viruses: A,B,C.

Hepatitis A virus : It is the one of the most common form of hepatitis also known as infectious hepatitis .It is a liver disease caused by the (HAV) hepatitis A virus .Hepatitis A can impact on any person. It (HAV) exist in the stools (feces or poop) of infected persons. HAV is spread when individual ingests something that is infected with HAV-contaminated stool ,in water, milk, and foods, especially in shellfish .

Hepatitis B virus : is a severe disease caused by a virus that harms the liver .It is commonly known as hepatitis B virus (HBV).It also called as serum hepatitis. It can cause a wide number of symptoms ranging from general malaise to lifelong infection, cirrhosis of the liver, liver cancer, liver failure, and death. HBV spreads by contaminated body fluids, such as blood, saliva, semen, vaginal fluids, tears, and urine, a infected blood transfusion ,

shared infected needles or syringes for injecting drugs ,sexual activity with an HBV-infected individual, transmission from HBV-infected mothers to their newborn infants.

Hepatitis C virus: is one of the common liver disease caused by a virus known as HCV(hepatitis C virus) .Infection with the hepatitis C virus can cause chronic liver disease and is the leading reason for liver transplant . HCV is spread by direct contact with an infected person's blood, getting a tattoo or body piercing with unsterilized tools, sharing drug needles , sexual contact with infected person.

Symptoms

Hepatitis, in its primary stages, may produces flu-like symptoms, including:
