Swine Flu Vaccination Side Effects
People have to decide if getting the Swine Flu/H1N1 vaccination is for them because, as with most vaccines, unfortunately, there are possible side effects for some people. The more common ones are fatigue, achy muscles and joints. Headaches and nausea may be a mild reaction. A minor side effect is redness, bruising or swelling at the injection site. The vaccination area may be tender. It may have a lump where the shot was administered.
Serious side effects are rare. If there is one, it would occur within minutes or only a few hours after the vaccination was administered. The H1N1 vaccination may cause fainting in teenagers. When administered to young children, it can make them irritable. Their appetites may be diminished, along with fever and drowsiness. The discomfort will usually go away in a day or two. If the symptoms persist, the family doctor needs to be consulted.
Some more common side effects of the vaccination are flu-like symptoms. There may be some swelling in the neck, armpit or groin. Fever and chills may occur. Receiving the flu shot can have some more unpleasant side effects. The patient may vomit, have diarrhea and stomach pain. Tingling in the hands and feet may occur. Sleeplessness may be a problem. These symptoms usually leave in a few days.
The occurrence of Guillian-Barre syndrome is a low risk side effect. This is an auto immune disease that affects the peripheral nervous system. The risk is one in a million people who are vaccinated. The Flu/H1N1 vaccine should not be taken by anyone who is allergic to eggs because those with egg allergies can be subject to a dangerous reaction. If you have any questions about whether you should or shouldn't undergo the flu vaccine, it's always best to talk with your health care provider.
